Dear #DJDIARY, #TheChainsmokers Wednesday, 4 June, 2014
You know that song that exploded onto the music charts internationally earlier this year, the one that has crowds’ shamelessly screaming #butfirstletmetakeaseflie to its beat?
There’s also the good chance you know this song because you hate it. Being the exact way its creators, The Chainsmokers, feel about it. But why do they feel this way? Well you’ll just have to keep reading to find out won’t you?
This is #DJDIARYENTRY/ONE
Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are The Chainsmokers, the New-York based duo are no dummies to the dance music scene, churning out indie, progressive and electro house remixes since igniting forces in 2012. But their big break would come after clowning around with some lyrics that would form the chart topper #Selfie:
“The song [#Selfie] just happened, we couldn’t have possibly planned for something like that. We are jokers and mess around with ideas and stupid concepts all the time and rarely do we actually follow through on them and in this case we did.”
Chucking back and forth a few mocking phrases about selfies and within an hour the boys had what they viewed somewhat as a gag #Selfie. The song climbed Billboard, iTunes and Spotify charts, has over a hundred thousand views on YouTube and would change the course of their careers forever.
And yet if anyone is over the song it’s these boys: “Enough of this #Selfie shit no one is more sick of it than us,” The Chainsmokers wrote on their Facebook page in May.
The boys have said there will be no more #Selfie style songs coming anytime soon, “We do fancy ourselves serious artists so for now it’ll be the type of music we enjoy.”
But when it actually comes to taking selfies which Chainsmoker is more inclined?
“Probably Drew, if you look at his personal Insta it’s all selfies,” Alex describes. “We travel together with no tour manager so if we want a photo and both of us in it chances are it’ll be a selfie… that said fuck selfies we don’t give a damn bout them.”
All that said The Chainsmokers say: “To see where we are [now], it’s pretty incredible.”

#DJDIARIES asked The Chainsmokers: If you boys could sit in on any other producers studio time, who would it be and why?
A: Great question! To name a few, Calvin Harris, Max Martin, Audien, Dr Luke…These guys all bring something to the table we admire so much from a production standpoint, both musically in their theory/application and in their sound. These guys are all the best and we have so much respect for them, and many others.
