Dear #DJDIARY,
All it takes is one song.
One song to really put a music producer on the map and earn them the credit they deserve.
And Brisbane DJs and producers, Odd Mob, might have done exactly that.
This is #DJDIARYENTRY/16
Like most twenty-year-olds, Odd Mob boys Robbie Jacobs and Harry Hope had some time to kill one night prior to hitting the clubs.
And so, with three hours to occupy themselves they would come up with the groundwork for a song that would subsequently earn them some deserved international recognition.
“We were getting ready to head out to see producer Mr Carmack... we had a few hours to kill before we left and we were really vibing some Jackin’ House as we were having a few beers,” the boys laugh.
“We thought it would be cool to make our own type of chunkier Jackin’ House. Within three hours, the main groundwork was finished.”
And this is how ‘Is it A Banger?’ by Odd Mob was created. Listen to 'Is It A Banger?' below:
But what about those hilarious lyrics? Where did they come from?
After watching an episode of the American sitcom Parks and Recreation, Robbie and Harry had a bit of a laugh at a scene where Aziz Ansari talks about his banger selection process (watch it below).
“We were coming up with ideas for vocals, there was this particular scene where Tom (Aziz Ansari) talked about his banger selection process. We thought it’d be a bit of a laugh and it ended up mixing perfectly with the tune. Thus, Is It a Banger? was born,” the boys smile.
Their song has gained some international airplay with DJs and producers such as EDX, Henry Fong, TJR, Tommie Sunshine and Andi Durrent playing the track on their radio shows.
The boys have expressed their gratitude and happiness saying, “the reaction has just been amazing.“
“The support we’ve been getting has been far bigger than we’ve ever received before. It’s so surreal to have some producers that you view as huge names supporting your tunes. In the past, Diplo supported one of our remixes and even played it on BBC Radio!”
Australia dropped the single early this week on Radio Station Triple J and it undoubtedly won’t stop there for the talented duo.
Robbie and Harry met each other a few years back at a youth event. Both carrying a passion for music with each playing the drums the friendship was inevitable.
They both have more than five years DJing experience and would create Odd Mob after entering a DJ competition in January 2013.
“There was a DJ Comp at Brisbane Club, Coniston Lane,” the boys say.
“We thought, why not enter as a duo and see how it goes...When we got through to the final round we only had 24 hours to come up with a name. Odd Mob came to mind,” the boys finish.
#DJDIARY Questions:
Q: If you could sit in any other producers studio time, who would it be and why?
A: What So Not/Flume. They just make some of the most awesome music around and they look like they’d be so fun to hang around with. Also, Mat Zo. He’s a wizard.
Q: How would your mum describe your music in a few words?
Robbie’s Mum: “It’s Loud.”
Harry’s Mum: sympathetically “Oh that sounds… uhh.. awesome Harry.”
