Adelaide's MotoGP Circuit Takes Shape

With just over a year until the Australian MotoGP Grand Prix makes its historic move to Adelaide, plans for the city's new street circuit are taking shape as organisers reveal further details about the venue that will host the world's premier motorcycle racing championship from 2027.

The Australian Grand Prix will be held in Adelaide under a six-year agreement running through to 2032, ending Phillip Island's 29-year tenure as the event's home. The inaugural Adelaide MotoGP is scheduled to take place in November 2027, bringing international attention to South Australia and marking a new chapter in Australian motorsport.

Late last month, Peter Malinauskas, Premier of South Australia, officially unveiled the proposed circuit design. The 4.13km, 15-corner layout reimagines sections of Adelaide's famous former Formula One street circuit, incorporating iconic landmarks including Stag Corner, Rundle Road, Brewery Bend and Dequetteville Terrace. Modelling suggests MotoGP bikes could exceed 340 km/h, making it one of the fastest circuits on the calendar.

MotoGP officials have described the project as the championship's first city-centre street circuit, combining the atmosphere of a major festival with world-class racing in the heart of Adelaide. Extensive planning has been undertaken with the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to ensure the circuit meets the highest modern safety standards for riders and teams.

The redevelopment has not been without controversy. Environmental concerns have emerged following the release of plans that indicate 377 trees within the circuit precinct may need to be removed, including 42 classified as significant trees. However, the South Australian Government has committed to replacing removed trees on a 10-to-1 basis, resulting in a net increase in tree numbers throughout the Adelaide Park Lands. A further 88 trees are expected to be transplanted to nearby locations where possible.

Construction of the circuit is expected to begin later this year following community consultation. Beyond MotoGP, organisers believe the new venue will play a significant role in Adelaide's major events calendar, with the circuit also expected to support future motorsport and cycling events.

As anticipation continues to build, Adelaide is preparing to welcome riders, teams and fans from around the world for what promises to be one of the most unique events in MotoGP history.
